A Realm Beyond Clouds

A good journey indeed. I love many ideas Card put in his book. Though there are some flaws (repetitive plot patterns and unconvincing character's age) it still worth to read.

 

One of my friend said that Ender's age and his abilities were convincing, however, his super genius brother and sister, all were born in the same family is incredible.

Seventy percents of the story is sweet tragic. Every romantic aspects were break down by those of harsh reality, yet with this, also accentuate their sublimes.

Mark as to read next year, maybe. I always fascinated of Sanderson's ideas. However, his prose is what I always dislike.

"Though fascinating with Victorian era and Steampunk cultures, I rarely read fantasy books established within in world of those things."

Chang Ge Xing  is a historical manhua (It's a term of Chinese comic), set in early years of Tang Dynasty. ChangGe is a daughter of Prince Li JianCheng who was murdered along side with his third brother by his second brother Li ShiMin, aka Emperor Tang Taizong. Faking her death and escaping from ChangAn, ChangGe sworn to come back and get revenge her uncle for his crime. However, wheel of fate had turned, forced her to take a long journey to northwest glassland, away from her homeland.

 

This manhua has every ingredients I like to taste from a Chinese historical fiction in very well-balanced proportion. ChangGe, main protagonist, cross-dressed as a young man, however, never ever irritated me with annoying aspect of character of such type. General Sun who can make me swoon every shot he appeared (I'm fangirling). There is political manuever that not too hard too follow, yet complex and witty enough to be intrigue. Cultural aspect both physical and psychological that portrayed accurately to what ancient China should be. (The artist is Chinese anyway :P) There is no romance included in the story yet but there are some hints in the latest chapter. Now I wanted to see where would the artist take ChangGe to.

 

Guess, I have to waited for next month :'(

I posted this review on Goodreads. I can't help but chuckled at myself for trying to imitated such witty prose of Austen's and eventually failed.

I feel that my writing skill is too scant to express all my admiration and fanaticism toward this Jane Austen's masterpiece. However, it would be ashamed for the author herself (though she had passed away for almost two decades) if I can't even conduct myself to write any word about it.

What chiefly roused my affection toward Pride and Prejudice would be Austen's writing. Perhaps my ill-chance had I never read anything that was written so swiftly and amusingly like this. Her dry humour, witty dialog easily had me salutes upon her feet. I firstly read it on my iPhone, free edition that is able to be downloading on iTunes. After reading for one-ten of the book, I ran off to the nearest bookstore to get a paperback copy. Because I knew that I would eventually love it, and I did!

The story, though dependent on character to drive the plot, is considered to be the most classic that portrayed hate-turns-love relationship. I have my prejudice against this type of relationship; it is being overused on various media such as romantic novels, almost all of K-Drama. But what make Pride and Prejudice outstanding is how this concept conveyed in the story. The story flowed naturally as if it was ordinary things that could happen in real life in that era. It didn't focus only on Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy since they were rarely been together on the scene. The environment around the couple: their upbringing, their family, their friends, their acquaintance, social values take their roles to create a story that seems normal to be an extraordinary one.

Speak of characterization. I love both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. I like how each of them learns what flaw is in their character and both improved them as the story progress. Other character is also animate, vivid and interesting. Mr. Bennet was no doubt one of the most insightful character in the book. Jane is lovely and contradicts to her sister in an intelligent way. Though I found some of them, mostly Mrs. Bennet, quite annoying; It is forgivable. All of their character was exhibited solely on the dialog. Also, conversations among them were an enjoyment and brain-exercising.

In conclusion, Pride and Prejudice is the first classic novel I have falling in love with. It was the best book I have ever read in this quarter, and maybe in this year. Jane Austen had broadened my aspect toward those classic novels I have read before and never happened to like. And her book indirectly informed me that I should give them a second chance; since I had prejudiced them due to my immature scope of reading.

PS. I was once told that Pride and Prejudice had provided an inspiration to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. I haven't finished latter but base on what I had seen in the movie, I can't conjure any resemblance between them.

Not too bad, but since I had been read The Queen's Thief before read this, there might be a lot of comparison between both of them.

This book set in the country named Carthyan, where their king, queen and crown prince was murdered by poison. There was a noble called Conner, who gathered four boys together for his plan to deceive the whole court and set one of four boys on the throne as a false second prince. While the real prince had died long ago because of an attack of the pirates.

The story was told by Sage, young orphan who was quick-witted and had a sharp tongue. The narrating was from first person POV. Sage as narrator tried to misled the same way as Eugenides did in The Thief. He didn't success as his model, because the writer had dropped too much Chekov's Gun that I could easy to notice and collect for the collection of my own. Sage also spilled many of his secret many pages before the revelation by himself, on his own word spoke to others.

Because of that, I can guess the plot twist before getting through the half of the book. Some was too obvious for someone, like me, who had read fairly amount of books that contained more complexity in political aspect. 

But as this book was aimed for Young Adult, I think the book suited this genre well. It's not too complicated for children or teenagers too read. And I also enjoyed this well. It was entertaining by interaction between the main protagonists, guessing what is next step of Sage's plan. I like how the writer interpret each character and how they were developed as the story progress. I like Sage as a character. I like Roden and Tobias too. All of them were not totally good, yet not totally evil. The one I found totally evil was Conner and Cregan. Which is not totally unacceptable, but thats mean no pity for them as well.

3.5 stars for me. I hope that the next book of the series would indicate me more of what this world was like, since most of the story has set in Conner's manor.

While not reading this, there were some thought in my head that went back to this book again and again. It was the first book in two years that could enchant me like this.

The setting took place in Napoleonic England. Clarke took this period setting in and created an alternative world, alternative history with magic in it. I really feel like I can walk down into that age through reading this, since it felt so real by mood, narrative tone, and social commentary based on the process of Restoration of English Magic, mindset and attitude of characters that accurate to the history.

Writing style reminded me of Victorian classic novels. For I always fascinating by Austen and Dickens' prose, I fell in love with Clarke's. Compare to both writer I referred to, Clarke's writing is much easier to read and it is very lovely. The storytelling was like Austen's, through the conversation and interaction between each characters. However, there is a dry humour that a bit like Dickens and there is some whimsical of fairy-tale which something of Clarke's own voice. Such a writing style properly gets along with the setting and the story.

Magic in this book gave me a bit of magic in Harry Potter, there is a spell to cast in various way (though without wands). They came to solve some problem occurred in England that time and took role in the Napoleonic War. As the story progressed to one point, it became more mysterious, more dangerous and grew unfathomable. Fairies, with their mischief behavior, added in and helped make the story more dark and gritty. On the last part of the book, sometime I felt chilled when reading some chapter as it grew darker.

What remarkable of Susanna Clarke's writing is her solid characterization. Every character, main protagonists and minor characters, all has each own distinguished character, vividly portrayed, very animated and fully developed. Jonathan Strange the main protagonist was a very bright young man who seems to be friendly toward everyone and quite respectable for many people. He also have many flaws such as recklessness, arrogant, too proud of his ability, his obsession in magic that made him forgot his wife many times, and sometimes ruthless. His entire flaw eventually destroyed him later. Mr. Norrell, Strange's tutor, have very complex and self-conflict character, he was a bookworm geek, a coward, introvert and isolated. He was very ambitious to revive English Magic despite the fact that he was afraid of another magician who might come and replace his position. There are a lot of minor characters who I really like such as Childermass, Arabella, Segundus, Lord Wellington, Sir Walter Pole, Vinculus, Stephen, a Gentleman with thistle-down hair and so on.

Another feature of this book is the usage of footnote. For me, I like to read footnote of translated book about anything I didn't understand of another culture. This book footnoted only of imaginary books and fairy-tales which only exist in Clarke's world! And for the longest, it scored a record of 3 pages with Angsana New 8 font! Almost every chapter there are footnotes, some was short and some was long, told us more information of what characters were talking about. Some of footnotes is really funny and very entertained. However, if you don't like footnote, you can skip them all and come back and reread them later.

This book is quite a slow book. It took times to develop setting, character's background. It's a book for savour every bits of details that Clarke meticulously weave into the words. It's character-centered. Each conflict disperses over every page. There are some conflicts and mysteries unsolved until the end. Its might irritated someone who preferred to have every conflict solved. Thus, this kind of ending even made the theme felt more grounded.

Definitely on of the best book I have read this year.

Good for light read. Characterization is interesting, Cimonere is a rebellious princess without annoying attitude. Old fairy-tale-like fantasy which brought up good memories from childhood. Highly recommended.

ภาษาของผู้เขียน ถือว่าสละสลวยสวยงามตามแบบฉบับนักเขียนชั้นครูสมัยก่อน การบรรยายในแต่ละส่วนถือว่าค่อนข้างละเอียด แต่ถามว่าเยิ่นเย้อหรือยืดเยื้อมั้ย สำหรับเราที่ผ่านนิยายภาษาอังกฤษย้อนยุคประเภทที่มีประโยคซ้อนประโยคขยายประโยคแล้วซ้อนประโยคอีกที เรื่องนี้ถือว่าอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง ค่อนข้างกระชับได้ใจความทีเดียว แต่ถ้าเทียบกับของทมยันตี (และบรรดางานเขียนของท่านในนามปากกาต่าง ๆ) ก็คงเรียกได้ว่าค่อนข้างยาวพอสมควรค่ะ

จุดขายของเรื่องนี้ที่สำคัญที่สุดคือการถ่ายทอดเอาวัฒนธรรมอาหรับมาแสดงในเรื่อง จากความละเอียดในการบรรยายเล่าเรื่อง การสร้างตัวละครแต่ละตัว บทสนทนา บทบรรยายถึงสถานที่ ภูมิประเทศ ภูมิอากาศ อาหารการกิน ความเป็นอยู่ของคนท้องถิ่น เรียกได้ว่าจับเอาสารานุกรมมาใส่ในหนังสือทีเดียว เหมาะจะเป็นต้นแบบสำหรับการเขียนนิยายแนวทะเลทราย แต่สำหรับเราที่ไม่ได้หลงใหลได้ปลื้มกับวัฒนธรรมอาหรับเท่าไหร่ เลยรู้สึกว่าตัวอักษรที่เสียสละไปกับการบรรยายจุดขายเหล่านี้ทำให้เรารู้สึกรำคาญเป็นบางครั้ง (แต่ถ้าลองเปลี่ยนเป็นจีนโบราณ ต่อให้เป็นสมัยชิงที่ชอบน้อยที่สุด หรือญี่ปุ่นโบราณ หรืออังกฤษยุควิคตอเรีย หรือกรีกโรมัน หรือยุโรป อาจจะไม่ได้รู้สึกแบบนั้นเลยก็ได้ จากใจคนที่อ่านสามชาติสามภพป่าท้อสิบหลี่แล้วอ่านเชิงอรรถทุกตัวอักษร)

ในส่วนของเนื้อเรื่อง เรียกได้ว่าราบเรียบไม่หวือหวาเท่าไหร่ สำหรับคนอ่านนิยายสายเน้นแต่เนื้อเรื่องอาจจะไม่ได้ชอบมาก ส่วนใหญ่เน้นการผจญภัยในทะเลทรายเกือบครึ่งเล่ม เป็นช่วงที่เหมือนจะน่าเบื่อเป็นบางครั้ง แต่ก็มีจังหวะให้ลุ้นในหลายจุดว่าพระเอกนางเอกจะรอดชีวิตรึเปล่า พอพระเอกนางเอกรอดมาได้ เนื้อเรื่องหลังจากนั้นกลายเป็นว่าหมดลุ้นไปทันที เพราะต่อจากนั้นก็เดาได้เกือบหมดว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นต่อไป จะจบยังไง เรื่องที่มีสอดแทรกการเมือง เราว่ายังไม่โดดเด่นเท่าเรื่องการถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรม และถือว่าค่อนข้างเป็นการเมืองที่เรียบง่าย เป็นสีสันให้กับเรื่องมากกว่า อุปสรรคเรื่องเชื้อชาติศาสนาที่ดูเหมือนน่าจะเป็นปัญหา แต่กลายเป็นว่าไม่ได้เป็นปัญหาสำคัญเท่ากับการเอาตัวรอดในทะเลทรายเลยแอบรู้สึกเซ็งหน่อยๆ

เรื่องตัวละครกลับเป็นอะไรที่พอจะช่วยชดเชยให้กับเนื้อเรื่องได้บ้าง ผู้เขียนมีความละเอียดและใส่ใจในการสร้างตัวละครหลักทั้งสองตัว และทำให้เห็นได้ว่าทั้งสองแต่ละตัวมีภูมิหลังความเป็นมาอย่างไรถึงได้ตัดสินใจในแต่ละแบบของตัวเอง ประมาณว่าถึงเราจะไม่ได้รู้สึกอินเท่าไหร่ แต่อ่านแล้วเข้าใจว่าทำไมมิเชลล์ถึงได้รักชารีฟ และทำไมชารีฟถึงสามารถรักมิเชลล์ได้ แล้วระหว่างการผจญภัยพัฒนาความสัมพันธ์ได้อย่างไร แต่ถึงอย่างงั้น ก็มีตัวละครบางตัวที่เรารู้สึกว่าผู้เขียนน่าจะทำได้ดีกว่านี้ เช่นแคชฟียา ถึงจะมีเหตุผลที่ทำให้ตัวละครตัวนี้ผันตัวจากเพื่อนนางเอกมาเป็นนางร้ายและทำเรื่องร้าย ๆ แต่เรายังรู้สึกว่าตัวละคร dramatize เกินไป (พอดีว่าไม่ถูกกับนางร้ายละครหลังข่าว ชีวิตจริงไม่เคยเจอคนแบบนี้ และไม่เคยเข้าใจคนประเภทนี้ละมั้ง) หรือเจ้าชายโอมาน ฝ่ายตัวร้ายที่รู้สึกว่ายังไม่ได้ถูก fleshed out มากพอ เลยดูเหมือนเป็นตัวละครที่มีไว้เพื่อสร้าง conflict มากกว่า

สรุปแล้วถ้าถามว่านิยายเรื่องนี้ทรงคุณค่าหรือไม่ เราถือว่าทรงคุณค่าด้วยเรื่องการถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรมและความคลาสสิค ถ้าถามว่าควรจัดว่าเป็นวรรณกรรมหรือไม่ เราถือว่าสมควรอย่างยิ่ง ด้วยภาษาเขียนที่สละสลวยสวยงามและความทรงคุณค่า แต่ถ้าถามว่าถูกใจเรามั้ย ถือว่ายังไม่ถูกใจเท่าไหร่ และไม่ได้รู้สึกซาบซึ้งหรือประทับใจนัก ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้น เป็นเพราะรสนิยมการอ่านของเราด้วยส่วนนึง

เรื่องนี้ถือเป็นวรรณกรรมเยาวชนที่เนื้อหาหนักหน่วงพอสมควร เพราะเป็นเรื่องของมนุษย์ที่กินเลือดกินเนื้อของมนุษย์อีกฝ่าย มีเรื่องสงคราม ความโหดร้าย การแก้แค้นกลับไปกลับมา ประมาณว่าถ้าผู้เขียนนำเสนอแบบ graphic มากกว่านี้คงได้ขึ้นเรต 15+ แต่วิธีการเขียนของผู้เขียนใช้วิธีบรรยายในจุดสุ่มเสี่ยงดังกล่าวได้ค่อนข้างอ่อนโยน เด็กอายุช่วงประถมปลายน่าจะอ่านได้แบบไม่มีพิษภัยนัก

อ่านจบแล้วรู้สึกว่าเป็นเรื่องที่ควรให้นักการเมืองทั้งสองสีสองฝ่ายอ่านจริงๆ เลยค่ะ แบบว่าอ่านการทำลายกันไปทำลายกันมาแบบนี้อดนึกถึงสงครามกีฬาสีไม่ได้เลย ใครผงาดขึ้นก็กดอีกฝ่าย ใครตกต่ำก็ดิ้นรนหาทางกลับมา นอกจากนี้บางทียังชวนให้นึกถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างแต่ละชนชั้น จริงๆ แล้วชนชั้นสูงอยู่ไม่ได้ถ้าขาดชนชั้นล่าง ชนชั้นสูงใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในความสุขสบาย เพราะต้องการถือไพ่เหนือกว่าจึงกดขี่ชนชั้นล่าง ชนชั้นล่างอยู่ในสภาวะจำยอมจนกระทั่งถึงจุดหนึ่งก็จะไม่ยอมทนและหันมาต่อต้านในที่สุด และระบบก็พลิกกลับกลายเป็นชนชั้นสูงกลายเป็นชนชั้นล่าง เป็นวัฏจักรอยู่ร่ำไป ทั้งที่จริงแล้วถ้าทั้งสองฝ่ายปล่อยวางความแค้น หันมาร่วมมือกัน ไม่เอาเปรียบกัน ทุกคนก็อยู่ร่วมกันได้อย่างมีสงบสุข

แต่ก็นั่นแหละค่ะ อุดมคติใช่ว่าจะเป็นอะไรที่ทำกันได้ง่ายๆ ตอนจบของเรื่องจึงไม่ได้จบแบบแฮปปี้มีความสุขเสียทีเดียว โคเวนและนัคทาก็คอยแก้ปัญหาที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตต่อไป

ประเด็นเก็บตก 1 : ธรรมชาติของโลกใบนี้โหดร้ายพอสมควร ความเป็นไปได้ในการอยู่รอดภายใต้ธรรมชาติแบบนี้มีแต่ชามูกับอิยาจะต้องร่วมมือกันจึงจะเป็นทางออกที่ดีที่สุด เหมือนกับการที่มนุษย์ต้องสร้างสังคม ต้องเปลี่ยนรูปแบบสังคมให้สามารถอยู่รอดภายใต้สภาพแวดล้อมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไป

ประเด็นเก็บตก 2 : ธรรมชาติเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเพราะน้ำมือของมนุษย์ สิ่งที่ตามมาคือมนุษย์ต้องรับผลจากความเปลี่ยนแปลงของธรรมชาติ

สรุปแล้วคือ เป็นหนังสือเล่มเล็กๆ สั้นๆ อ่านเพลินๆ วันเดียวก็จบ แต่ถ้าตั้งใจอ่านดีๆ มันให้อะไรเยอะมากจริงๆ

Clear it was one of the most intricate manga I've ever read. Artworks is very beautiful and meticulously drawn to captured every details and made the picture seems real. Cultural that integrated with the story is accurate and well-researched. Three stars were for those pros.

However, what I found lacked in this manga were dialogues and interactions between each characters. They were soooooo japan that I couldn't convinced myself to believed everything is happened in middle-Asia. That's the reason why I can't give it more than three stars.

Not as impressive as the first one, however, a nice ride anyway.
